How to Recycle a Computer Monitor Keyboard and Mouse

How to Recycle a Computer Monitor Keyboard and Mouse

A desktop computer and its various accessories, including the keyboard and mouse, should not simply be thrown into a dumpster or trash can when you no longer have any use of them. Not only is this wasteful, but computer parts also contain components that can be potentially harmful to the environment. These harmful components include a cathode ray tube, lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium and bromide found in computer monitors, as well as a plastic circuit board found in the keyboard and mouse.

·  1 Check to see if the computer monitor, keyboard and mouse are still working. Hook up the monitor to a separate computer tower if you know the one you have is non-functioning to test it out. Similarly, connect the keyboard and mouse to a separate desktop computer that you know is functioning to see if they work properly.
·  2 Donate a computer monitor, keyboard and mouse that are still in working condition. You might have a friend or family member that could use it, or you can take it to a local charity, such as the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Community centers, schools and libraries might also accept donations of computer hardware.
·  3 Contact the manufacturer of the computer parts. Some manufacturers have programs in place where you can send back damaged parts for proper disposal. Ask if the manufacturer will send packaging and postage to make sending back the components easier.
·  4 Talk to local electronics retailers and computer repair shops about their recycling programs. Certain retailers and repair shops might accept computer components like a monitor, keyboard or mouse for recycling.
·  5 Bring the monitor, keyboard and mouse to a local recycling facility that accepts these computer components. You can locate recyclers in your area to check if they accept these materials by using resources like Earth 911.com.
